The exhibition Cold Front from the Balkans focuses on different generations of individual and groups of artists from the region known as “the Balkans,” and takes its form from a natural phenomenon and geography—the wind and the Balkan mountain range—with no regard to the inevitable political connotations of the region. Departing from the phrase “Cold front from the Balkans” that is widely used in Turkey, the exhibition catalogue brings together works by 36 artists expressing a response to the social, political, and cultural milieu that surrounds them. The exhibition features, among other names, Maja Bajević, Braco Dimitrijević, Vadim Fishkin, IRWIN, Laibach, Mladen Miljanović, Ivan Moudov, OHO, Dan Perjovschi, Mladen Stilinović, Ulay, and Sislej Xhafada. Within the frame set up by the curators Ali Akay and Alenka Gregoriè’s texts, the catalogue accompanying the exhibition considers the Balkan artists’ attitudes with respect to the state, ideology, geography, and alternative histories. The texts introducing the artists and their works function as a guide to the contemporary Balkan art.
