YILLIK: Annual of Istanbul Studies 4 (2022) includes three research articles on different issues in Istanbul’s history: the phenomenon of the Phanariot houses, projections of xenophobia in the early republican period, and Beyoğlu’s religious soundscape. Orçun Can Okan’s “Projections of Xenophobia: The Capitulations, Employment, and Anglo-Turkish Relations in the 1920s” is the winner of our Early Career Article Prize.

The Cabinet section, devoted every year to a close analysis of a document from the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation collections, analyzes a reader’s letter sent to author Fikret Adil by the president of the Turkish Society for the Protection of Animals, Nazım Kıbrızlı. Meclis features a special dossier on the Allied occupation of Istanbul, co-edited by Daniel-Joseph MacArthur-Seal and Gizem Tongo. This dossier, with contributions by the exhibition’s consultants, accompanies the exhibition Occupied City: Politics and Daily Life in Istanbul, 1918–1923 (Meşgul Şehir: İşgal İstanbul’unda Siyaset ve Gündelik Hayat, 1918–1923), opened at the Istanbul Research Institute on January 11, 2023, curated by MacArthur-Seal and Tongo.

The Reviews and Istanbul Bibliography section, which includes five book and one exhibition review, is headlined by a featured review essay by James Grehan on A Companion to Early Modern Istanbul, co-edited by Shirine Hamadeh and Çiğdem Kafescioğlu, and concluded by the Istanbul Bibliography 2022, which, per usual, brings together the latest research on Istanbul.
